Springs are a common type of simple harmonic oscillator.

They function on the basis of Hooke's Law, which states that the resisting force of the spring is related to its extension (or compression) and its characteristic spring constant.

F = -kx

Where:    F = force applied or resisting force (N)
                  k = spring constant (N/m)
                  x = change in length (m)

The energy involved with springs is discussed in the Dynamics section.
